You can print a children’s book from Canva, but the words PDF Print do not prove that the downloaded file matches a book printer. Build the interior at the required page size, export it as one ordered PDF with one book page per PDF page, and keep the cover separate. Check bleed, safe areas, crop marks, images, fonts, color, page order, and the current cover template in the downloaded files before approving a proof.

Is a Canva PDF ready for book printing?
It can be, but the export label is only the start of the check. A printer evaluates the PDF page size, number and order of pages, bleed geometry, safe areas, images, fonts, color spaces, cover dimensions, and other production conditions.
Canva offers PDF Standard and PDF Print downloads. It also offers options for crop marks, bleed, and flattening. Those features are useful, but none of them knows which KDP, Lulu, IngramSpark, local printer, or private one-copy book route you selected unless you set up and inspect the file for that route.
Use this distinction: Canva creates and exports the design. The production provider defines the file that passes.
Keep the editable Canva source. Do not make the exported PDF your only master. If the provider changes, you may need different page dimensions, bleed, color handling, cover geometry, or page-count-dependent spine width.
Set the physical page size before laying out the book
Choose the finished trim size and production route before placing the final text and illustrations. A square social-media template, presentation slide, A4 document, or US Letter page is not automatically a book page.
The exported PDF inherits the design’s page geometry. Lulu says the PDF page size determines the book sizes available in its workflow. KDP requires the manuscript page size to match the selected trim and bleed choice. IngramSpark likewise checks the file against the selected title specifications.
Record two sizes when the book has full bleed:
- trim size: the finished page after cutting;
- PDF page size: the larger production page that includes the required bleed.
Do not add the bleed twice. If the Canva page was already built at the complete provider-required PDF size, an additional export option can make the file too large. If the page was built only at trim size, simply seeing artwork touch the Canva edge does not prove the exported PDF contains the required production bleed. Inspect the final page boxes and measurements.
Keep important text inside the safe area
Bleed protects edge-to-edge artwork. It does not protect text near the cut. Keep titles, names, page numbers, faces, and important details inside the provider’s current safe area.
The inside edge may need more room because binding makes part of the page less visible. Do not use the same narrow margin on every edge merely because it looks balanced in the Canva editor.
Build the interior as ordered single pages
Use one Canva page for one physical book page. Export the complete interior as one multi-page PDF in reading order. Do not export each two-page spread as one wide PDF page unless the selected provider explicitly asks for that format.
KDP requires single-page files rather than spreads. Lulu’s current PDF guidance calls for a single-page layout and says odd-numbered pages appear on the right, with even-numbered pages on the left. IngramSpark also rejects spread-format interiors for its standard workflow.
Include every intentional blank page in the interior. The first printed page normally begins on the right side. A missed blank can shift every later illustration, page turn, and spread relationship.
Use one consistent page size and orientation
All interior pages should have the same production dimensions and orientation unless the provider specifically supports a mixed format. Lulu’s current error guidance rejects interiors with inconsistent page sizes or orientations.
Open the exported PDF and check page properties. Do not rely on Canva thumbnails, which can make slightly different page dimensions look identical.
Eight checks for the downloaded Canva PDF
1. PDF Print versus PDF Standard
Use the export option that preserves the quality and structure needed for the selected route. PDF Print is usually the more relevant starting option for physical output, but it still needs provider-specific inspection.
Do not use the file name or export label as proof. Open the actual downloaded PDF and check its page dimensions, page count, images, fonts or flattened content, color spaces, and security settings.
2. Bleed
Any illustration or background intended to reach the trimmed edge must extend through the required bleed area. KDP says that if even one interior page needs bleed, the entire manuscript must be prepared as a bleed PDF. Lulu and IngramSpark publish their own page-size and edge instructions.
A white sliver near an edge usually cannot be fixed by telling the printer to cut more. Extend the source artwork into the required bleed and export a corrected file.
3. Crop marks and printer marks
Canva can include crop marks and bleed in a download. That option can be useful for some local cut-sheet jobs. It is not a universal book-production setting.
KDP says its cover PDF should have no crop marks. Lulu says not to include trim, bleed, crop, or registration marks in its book PDFs. IngramSpark says not to include crop, printer, or registration marks. Follow the selected provider rather than turning on every print-looking checkbox.
4. Image resolution at final size
An illustration can look sharp at phone size and still be weak on a full book page. Canva’s own print guidance tells users to check images at final print size and cites 300 DPI as its quality target. Lulu and IngramSpark also use 300 ppi as a current recommended or required production target in relevant routes.
Judge the original pixel dimensions against the final printed inches. Scaling a small image larger in Canva does not add original detail.
5. Fonts and text
Check the exported PDF itself. The Canva editor cannot prove what the downloaded file contains. Provider rules may require embedded fonts, outlined text, or flattened content. Verify that every character, punctuation mark, accent, and line break appears correctly.
Canva’s Flatten PDF option merges layers into a static layer and can help preserve appearance. It is not a universal font repair. Flattening may turn live content into a static image and can increase file size, so zoom into small type and check the resulting resolution and provider requirement.
6. Transparency and complex elements
Shadows, transparent overlays, gradients, frames, imported SVGs, and layered effects can process differently in a production workflow. Inspect the final PDF for missing objects, edge boxes, unexpected blending, and rasterized type.
If the provider requires flattened transparent layers or vector objects, use an export path that satisfies that rule and inspect the result. Do not flatten blindly before preserving the editable source.
7. Color route
Canva warns that screen color can differ from print. That is true, but it does not establish the color space required by a third-party book provider.
KDP, Lulu, and IngramSpark do not use one universal color instruction. Use the current color specification for the exact interior and cover. A Canva Print statement about Canva’s own physical products is not a substitute for the selected book printer’s requirement.
8. File protection and page count
Do not password-protect the production PDF. Confirm the complete page count, including intentional blanks, and compare the first and last pages against the planned reading order.
If you import a PDF back into Canva, Canva’s current upload guidance says the PDF pages become individual images in an A4 document. Do not assume a re-import preserves the original editable book setup or production page dimensions. Return to the saved Canva source when corrections are needed.
Create the book cover as a separate file
Do not place the front cover as page one of the interior PDF. KDP, Lulu, and IngramSpark all use separate interior and cover files for the routes discussed here.
The final cover is not just a front-cover rectangle. It usually needs one integrated production spread containing the back cover, spine, and front cover. A casewrap hardcover or dust jacket can add wrap, hinge, board, or flap areas.
Finalize the interior first because the accepted page count and selected paper can affect the spine. Generate the current cover template for the exact provider, product, trim, binding, paper, color choice, and page count.
Canva can be used to place artwork on a correctly sized cover canvas, but do not scale the provider template to make it fit a convenient design size. The final exported PDF must match the template’s full document dimensions.
Current provider checks are not identical
| Check | KDP example | Lulu example | IngramSpark example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Interior layout | Single pages | Single-page layout | Single pages, not spreads |
| Crop marks | No marks on cover | No trim, bleed, crop, or registration marks | No crop, printer, or registration marks |
| Interior and cover | Separate files | Separate files | Separate files |
| Cover | Back, spine, front in one PDF | One-piece PDF from current specifications | Use current custom template |
This comparison is a starting map, not a substitute for the current instructions for the exact product. Rules can differ by binding, trim, paper, color, distribution choice, and region.
A safer Canva-to-print workflow
- Choose provider, product, binding, trim, paper, and color route.
- Record the required interior PDF page size with or without bleed.
- Set the Canva interior to that physical geometry before final layout.
- Use one Canva page per book page and include intentional blanks.
- Keep important content inside the provider’s safe and gutter areas.
- Export the complete interior as one ordered PDF.
- Confirm page size, page count, bleed, marks, images, fonts, transparency, color, and security.
- Generate the current cover template after the interior is stable.
- Build and export the cover separately at the template’s exact size.
- Review the complete digital proof and use a printed copy for physical color and binding judgment.
Keep the editable Canva design, original uploaded illustrations, final interior PDF, final cover PDF, provider template, and approved proof as separate files. A clean file history makes corrections safer.

Frequently asked questions
Should I choose PDF Print in Canva?
It is the relevant starting export for many physical-print jobs, but the downloaded file still has to match the selected provider’s page size, bleed, marks, images, fonts, color, and cover rules.
Should I turn on crop marks and bleed?
Follow the provider. KDP cover, Lulu, and IngramSpark guidance discussed here prohibit crop or printer marks. Bleed content still needs the required larger page geometry.
Should I flatten the Canva PDF?
Only when the production route benefits from or requires flattened content. Preserve the editable source and inspect small type, image resolution, transparency, and file size after flattening.
Can I export the interior as two-page spreads?
Not for the standard KDP, Lulu, and IngramSpark routes covered here. Export one book page per PDF page in reading order.
Can the front cover be the first page of the interior?
No. Prepare the interior and the full cover as separate production PDFs.
