You can print one copy of a children’s book when the story and artwork are already complete. Send the finished interior file and an optional cover for review. The file may need size, margin, image, bleed, or cover adjustments before production. Approve a digital proof first, then one real hardcover can be printed and shipped.
Can you really print only one copy of a children’s book?
Yes. Digital book production makes one-copy printing possible, although not every printer or product configuration supports it. Many conventional print shops are designed around minimum quantities because setup costs become more economical across dozens or hundreds of copies. Print-on-demand and specialist one-copy services use different workflows.
Current US search results for storybook printing include Barnes & Noble Press, Mixam, Blurb, Pixartprinting, PrintingCenterUSA, BookBaby, and other providers. A Reddit result also appears prominently from someone trying to print one illustrated children’s book because many services required a minimum order. The demand is real, but the customer still has to choose between a self-service platform and an assisted production service.
YourBookBound is the assisted route. It is for people who have already written the story and collected the illustrations or page designs, but do not want to become experts in book-production software just to receive one hardcover.
Who is one-copy children’s book printing for?
The strongest use cases are personal rather than commercial:
- a parent turns a child’s handwritten story and drawings into a lasting book;
- a grandparent creates one illustrated family story as a gift;
- a teacher preserves a finished class story or student project;
- an author makes one private copy before deciding whether to revise or publish;
- a family creates a tribute, adoption story, travel memory, or bedtime story intended for one child.
This is not a personalized template service. YourBookBound does not insert a child’s name or photo into a prewritten story. The customer supplies the original, completed content. It is also not a writing or illustration service. If the story, artwork, or ending is still being created, finish that creative work before ordering a physical book.
How complete must the story be before you upload?
Complete enough that every intended page exists and the reading order is final. The file may still need technical production work, but it should not depend on the printer to invent missing content.

Before uploading, ask:
- Is the text final enough to print?
- Is every illustration included?
- Are the pages in the exact reading order?
- Are blank pages deliberate?
- Do I own or have permission to reproduce the words, artwork, photographs, and fonts?
- Do I have the highest-quality image files available if replacements are needed?
A child’s original drawing can absolutely be part of the book. Photograph or scan it evenly, avoid shadows and glare, and keep the highest-resolution original. Phone images sent through messaging apps can be compressed, so use the original camera file whenever possible.
Which files can you send?
YourBookBound accepts PDF, DOC, DOCX, and RTF for the interior. If a separate cover already exists, it may be PDF, JPG, JPEG, or PNG. Each individual upload can be up to 100 MB.
A finished PDF usually gives the clearest picture of the intended page layout. Word and RTF documents are editable and may reflow; they can still be reviewed, but they may need conversion and layout preparation. If the illustrations exist as separate image files instead of a complete interior, they may need layout preparation. That preparation is included in the same $99 USD service. The free check explains how to prepare the book from your completed content.
If you are unsure what to send, use the version that is closest to the finished reading experience. Do not include identity documents, payment details, or unrelated personal records inside the upload.
What makes a children’s book file different?
Illustrations often reach the edge
Picture books commonly use full-page art. Edge-to-edge artwork usually needs bleed—extra image area beyond the final trim. Without it, normal cutting tolerance can leave a thin white sliver. Important faces, hands, speech bubbles, and text should remain inside the safe area even when the background extends past the edge.
Two-page spreads cross a physical gutter
A screen preview shows a flat spread. A bound hardcover curves into the center. Avoid placing small faces, words, or essential details directly across the gutter. A landscape or sky can cross more safely than a sentence or a character’s eyes.
Children’s text needs breathing room
Large type is helpful, but size alone does not make a page readable. Check contrast between text and art, line length, spacing, and the distance from trim and fold areas. Do not place dark text over a busy dark illustration or light text over a pale sky without a deliberate contrast treatment.
Image quality must be judged at print size
An illustration may look sharp as a small thumbnail but soften when spread across a large page. The review should consider the image’s pixel dimensions relative to the intended printed size. Artificially enlarging a small image does not restore missing detail.
The cover depends on the finished interior
Hardcover spine width is tied to production specifications and final page count. A front-cover image by itself is not necessarily a complete cover wrap. If you already have a cover, send it. Cover and spine setup are included in the same $99 USD service.
What should you check in the digital proof?
Read the proof like the child will read the book—slowly, from the first visible page to the last. Check:
- the title and author name;
- names, pronouns, dates, dedications, and captions;
- page order and paired spreads;
- missing words or text that reflowed after conversion;
- cropped faces, hands, or important illustration details;
- text and art near the gutter;
- front cover, spine, and back cover orientation;
- any low-resolution risk disclosed during preparation.
A digital proof cannot show exact paper feel or guarantee that printed color will match a glowing screen. It can show composition, order, placement, and obvious file problems. Proof approval is therefore a content decision as well as a production checkpoint.
What does one finished children’s hardcover cost?
YourBookBound offers one complete service for $99 USD, including:
- File preparation: technical corrections and interior layout preparation;
- Cover and proof: cover design or adjustment and spine setup and a digital proof with revisions before approval;
- Your finished book: one hardcover and standard tracked shipping.
The $99 USD price includes all these services. There is no separate YourBookBound file-correction, layout, cover-preparation, production or standard-shipping fee.

Cheaper self-service routes exist. They can be a good choice if you already understand trim size, page setup, bleed, image resolution, cover geometry, and platform warnings. The assisted price is for a customer who values human review, a predictable total, and fewer technical decisions.
How long should you allow for a gift or special date?
First allow time for the free check, questions, file preparation, and your proof review. After payment and proof approval, YourBookBound normally completes production and dispatches from China within three calendar days. International delivery typically takes approximately seven days after dispatch, with tracking sent by email.
For birthdays, holidays, graduations, and school events, add a buffer. Carrier and customs delays are outside a normal production estimate. If the deadline is fixed, share the date during the initial request, but do not place the order on the assumption that a typical transit estimate is a guaranteed delivery date.
Frequently asked questions
Can you write or illustrate the children’s book for me?
No. The current service starts after the story or other content is already written. It is file preparation and production, not story writing or illustration creation.
Can I print only one book and not publish it?
Yes. YourBookBound’s standard service is private printing, not retail publication. It does not list the book for sale or distribute it to stores.
Do I need an ISBN?
Not for a private copy that is not being sold or distributed. If you later decide to sell the book, check the requirements of your intended retail or distribution channel.
Can I upload photographs of handwritten pages?
They can be reviewed, but separate images normally need layout preparation before they become a coherent book interior. Use evenly lit, high-resolution originals and use the free check to confirm the layout plan, included in the $99 USD service.
What if the finished book has a problem caused in production?
Report the issue within 30 days of delivery. If YourBookBound verifies that it caused a covered printing, trimming, binding, assembly, or fulfillment problem, you may choose a corrected reprint or a refund under the Refund & Reprint Policy.
One story. One real book.
Upload the finished story and let a human check the files.
No payment is required at upload. File corrections, layout and cover preparation are included in the single $99 USD service.
