Yes, you can print a Canva-designed book as a professionally bound hardcover. Finish the pages at the intended book size, download the complete design as a PDF Print, inspect every page in reading order, and follow the printer’s file instructions for bleed and cover setup. Canva’s print-ready export does not by itself determine a hardcover’s final spine or full-wrap cover dimensions.
In this guide: choose the page size · export the interior PDF · inspect it page by page · handle bleed and the cover correctly · prepare a clean handoff.
1. Decide what kind of printed book you want
First separate three different goals: a home-folded booklet, a product ordered through Canva, or a separately bound hardcover made from your finished Canva pages. The export steps below are for the third goal. A PDF for a home printer may use booklet spreads or imposed page order; a book printer generally needs the interior pages in normal reading order unless that printer’s instructions say otherwise.
Write down the finished page width and height before you export. Do not rely on a generic Canva template size just because it looks close. A design created at flyer, presentation, or US Letter size may need layout changes before it becomes a book. Changing dimensions at the end can move text, crop images, or alter page breaks.
2. Set up the Canva pages before the final export
- Open the completed design and confirm that every intended book page is included in one Canva document.
- Choose a trim size with the printer or book plan before rebuilding pages. Keep a copy of the original design before resizing.
- Turn on Canva’s margin guides and print-bleed view from the page settings when available. Keep names, page numbers, captions and other important details well inside the safe area.
- Extend background colors and pictures beyond the trim edge only where a full-bleed result is intended. Do not stretch small text or important details into the bleed.
- Check inner margins as well as outer edges. Text near the binding side can feel crowded after the pages are bound, even if nothing is cut off.
Canva documents do not all expose the same guide controls. Its Help Center says bleed and margin features are unavailable in Canva Docs and that, for printing outside Canva, you should check the print provider’s bleed requirements. Treat the guides as a design aid, not a universal printer specification.
3. Download the correct PDF from Canva
- Select Share → Download.
- Choose PDF Print, not PDF Standard. Canva describes PDF Print as its 300-dpi print export and provides bleed, crop-mark and color-profile options where available.
- Select All pages, unless you are intentionally exporting a specified range for a separate reason.
- Use a clear filename such as
interior-authorname-trimsize-date.pdf. Keep the editable Canva design and exported PDF as separate files. - Choose bleed and crop-mark settings only after checking the receiving printer’s instructions. Crop marks are not automatically required for every book file.
Canva lists CMYK profile export among options available to some paid plans. If you do not see it, do not delay the project or guess at a profile: ask the printer whether it can accept your PDF and manage color conversion. A screen preview cannot guarantee the exact appearance of ink on paper.
4. Run this page-by-page PDF check
Open the downloaded PDF in a viewer and use the thumbnail panel to scan the whole document. Then check these items in order:
- Page count: compare the PDF total with the Canva design. Look for accidental duplicates, missing pages, or empty pages that were not intentional.
- Reading order: follow the pages from the title page to the final page. Do not rearrange them as printer spreads unless the printer specifically asks for imposed pages.
- Text edges: inspect titles, folios, captions and small text near all four edges and near the binding side.
- Images: zoom in on photographs, illustrations, charts and screenshots. A 300-dpi export cannot restore detail that was missing in the source image.
- Font and symbol check: verify accents, punctuation, special characters and any unusual font styling in the exported file.
- Full-bleed pages: make sure the background continues past the intended trim edge. A thin white line in a design that should print to the edge usually means the background stops too soon.
- Blank pages: confirm that every blank page is deliberate and that chapter openings or right-hand starts still land where you intend.
Do not approve a file based only on the Canva editor preview. The exported PDF is the handoff file, so check that exact file rather than the editable design alone.
5. Keep the hardcover cover separate from the interior decision
A front-cover graphic is not necessarily a production-ready hardcover cover. A full-wrap hard cover can include the back, spine and front, and the spine width depends on the final production specification. Do not estimate a spine from a template found online or reuse a cover template made for a different printer, paper or page count.
If you have only made a front cover in Canva, keep it as a reference and send it with the interior for review. If you have a full cover file, identify it separately from the interior PDF and label the file clearly. Ask whether the printer wants a single spread, a template-based PDF, or only the artwork and title details.
6. Make a clean handoff
Before sending anything, create a short handoff note containing:
- book title and author name exactly as they should appear;
- intended finished size and whether pages are color or black-and-white;
- the total interior page count and any deliberate blank pages;
- whether you have a front-cover concept or a complete cover file;
- delivery country and the date by which you hope to have the physical book;
- the single final interior PDF, plus any clearly named optional cover file.
Keep your Canva edit link private unless the service asks for it. A PDF export is easier to review consistently than a live design link that may change after you submit it.
What YourBookBound needs from a Canva author
YourBookBound’s file guide accepts a completed Canva book as a PDF interior; a separate cover is optional. You do not need to calculate the hardcover spine or finish every production setting before asking for a free file check. The current service is US$99 for one hardcover, including human file review, layout and cover support, a digital proof and revisions, printing, and standard tracked shipping worldwide. Submit the exact PDF you want reviewed and note the size or cover preferences you already have.
